In the 16th century, the islands were named 'Las Islas Filipinas' in honour of King Philip II of Spain, which was then later Anglicized to 'the Philippine Islands' after they were annexed by the United States.

Though its rich history, Philippine culture has many affinities with the West. Filipino and English are the official languages and Roman Catholicism is the predominant religion.
