Flag of Malta

The Republic of Malta is a small and densely populated island country situated in the Mediterranean Sea, south of the island of Sicily (Italy), north of Libya and east of Tunisia. It consists of an archipelago of seven islands, with only the three largest (Malta, Ghawdex or Gozo, and Kemmuna or Comino) being inhabited. It is currently the smallest EU country both in population and in area.

Malta is the only nation in the world that has collectively been awarded the George Cross for conspicuous gallantry in WWII as a part of the British Empire, and its flag bears a replica of that award.

Malta gained its independence from Great Britain in 1964. It is a popular destination with those from the UK due to its weather, large amount of English speaking locals and historical ties with Britain.
