Flag of Maldives

The Republic of Maldives is an island nation consisting of an archipelago of 1,190 coral islands grouped into 26 coral atolls (200 inhabited islands, plus 80 islands with tourist resorts) in the Indian Ocean. They lie south-southwest of India and about 700 kilometres (435 mi) south-west of Sri Lanka.

Maldives is the smallest Asian country in terms of population. It is also the smallest predominantly Muslim nation in the world. The country's name is thought to mean 'a thousand islands', 'garland of islands', or 'island of women'. Others believe the name means 'palace' (from Mahal in Arabic).

The Maldives are considered one of the most beautiful groups of Islands on earth and every year attract tens of thousands of travellers and holiday makers. The sun, white sands and turquoise seas combine to offer a truly wonderful island paradise matched only by some of the Pacific Island chains.
