Flag of Japan

Japan is an island nation in East Asia, located in the Pacific Ocean. It lies to the east of China, Korea and Russia, stretching from the Sea of Okhotsk in the north to the East China Sea in the south. The country comprises over three thousand islands extending along the Pacific coast of Asia, the largest of which are Honshu, Hokkaido, Kyushu and Shikoku. Most of the islands are mountainous, many volcanic, including Japan's highest peak, Mount Fuji. Home to around 128 million people, Japan has the world's tenth largest population. The Greater Tokyo Area is the largest metropolitan area in the world, with over 30 million residents.

Whether you end up taking photos of a reproduction Eiffel Tower, surfing an indoor wave, musing in a Zen temple, shacking up in a love hotel or kipping down in a capsule, you'll do best to come to Japan with an open mind and be prepared to be surprised.

Somewhere between the elegant formality of Japanese manners and the candid, sometimes boisterous exchanges that take place over a few drinks, between the sanitised shopping malls and the unexpected rural festivals, everyone finds their own vision of Japan.
