Flag of India

The Republic of India is a country in South Asia, bounded by the Bay of Bengal on the east, the Indian Ocean on the south and the Arabian Sea on the west. It is bordered by the People's Republic of China, Nepal and Bhutan to the north-east, Bangladesh and Myanmar to the east, and Pakistan to the west. It is the largest country on the Indian Subcontinent, the seventh largest country in the world (approximately a third of the size of the USA), and the second most populated country on earth (behind China). Indeed China and India are the only two countries whose population exceeds one billion people.

The name India is derived from Indus, which is derived from the Old Persian word Hindu, the historic local appellation for the Indus River. Other local and historic names include Bharat and Hindustan (Persian: Land of the Hindus).

India is a fascinating mix of the old and new with ancient civilisations, monuments and cultures fusing with modern technology, economy and media. A multi-lingual, multi-ethnic society, India is also home to a diversity of wildlife in a variety of protected habitats.
