Getting There & Getting About

International Airports

Internal Transport

There are some domestic flights from Paramaribo to towns in the interior, and to the Nieuw Nickerie district. However, the most efficient (and inexpensive) method of travelling to the interior and some coastal regions is by river transport. There are currently no rail services in operation.

Car hire is available at the airport and in Paramaribo through main hotels. The road network is reasonable, although some roads have large potholes, making it essential to carry a full set of spares.

There are bus services from the capital to most villages. Although this method is relatively cheap, it is also tends to be very crowded and chaotic.

Taxis are not metered and fares must be agreed before departure. However, they may be very difficult to find on Sundays or after 10pm. Tipping is not necessary.
