Internal Transport
Poland has a comprehensive domestic air network linking all major cities. Flights from Warsaw to Krakow take 1 hour 40 minutes, whilst flights to Poznan or Gdansk take just an hour.
There is a cheap, efficient rail network linking all parts of the country in a network radiating from Warsaw. The fastest and most comfortable trains are the Inter-City (IC) or Express (Ex) routes. The Eurail Poland Pass is available to visitors travelling from outside of Europe and offers unlimited rail travel within the country for 5, 8, 10 or 15 days' travel within a one-month period. The InterRail One-Country Pass offers travel for 3, 4, 6 or 8 days in one month within Poland for anyone residing outside of the country.
Roads are in reasonable condition, ranging from narrow, pot-holed single lanes to brand-new smooth motorways. Major inter-city routes use the prefix 'E' and motorways use 'A'. Car hire is available from major firms at airports or within cities (minimum hiring age is 21). Speed limits are 130 kph (81 mph) on motorways, 100 kph (62 mph) on major roads, 90 km (55 mph) on other roads and 50 kph (31 mph) in built-up areas.
There are good regional bus and coach services operating throughout the country.
Taxis are available in all main towns, and can be ordered by phone or found at ranks. There is a surcharge from 11 pm to 5 am, at weekends, and for journeys out of town. Tipping is welcomed.
In Warsaw, public transport is provided by bus, metro and tram services. Tickets are valid for all services and can be bought as a single ride or as a day, week or monthly pass. Although some buses allow the purchase of tickets on board, it is best to purchase before you use any transport.
Krakow has a similar transport system, except there is no metro. Public transport tickets are available in all towns at post offices, hotels and green Ruch kiosks.
