Getting There & Getting About

International Airports

Internal Transport

There are few domestic flights in Lithuania. Domestic airports are based at Kaunas, Palanga and Siauliai.

Local ferries connect Curonian Spit and the Klaipeda.

There are some good rail connections from Vilnius to Klaipeda, Kaunas and Siauliai, and twice-daily trains run to the Baltic coast. Those wanting to visit the resorts of Palanga or Neringa should take the train to Klaipeda, before completing the journey by bus. There are also suburban trains that connect Vilnius with the popular lake district of the National Park. The ancient Trakai Castle can be reached by taking the suburban train going to Trakai.

Lithuania has a good road network, with modern four-lane motorways linking Vilnius with Kaunas, Klaipeda and Panevezys. Car hire is available from local and international firms. The speed limit is 110 kph (68 mph) on motorways; 100 kph (60 mph) on the Vilnius-Kaunas highway; 90 kph (56 mph) on country roads and 60 kph (44 mph) inside towns.

Buses are often quicker and more frequent than domestic trains and serve almost every town and village.

Public transport within the cities includes trolleybuses and buses, which usually run from 5am to 11pm. Transport coupons can either be bought from the driver or at news kiosks before boarding. Taxis display illuminated 'Taksi' signs and can be hailed in the street, ordered by phone or found at taxi ranks. Minibuses are more expensive, but less crowded than buses.
