Etiquette & Culture

Kyrgyzstan is a nation descended from nomadic herds people. Refusing an offer of koumys, a mildly alcoholic fermented mares' milk, may cause offence. Tipping is becoming more customary, especially in international hotels.

Most Kyrgyz people are Muslims and visitors should respect local customs and sensitivities at all times, especially during the holy month of Ramadan.

Taking photos of anything that could be perceived as being of security or military interest may result in problems with the authorities.
