Etiquette & Culture

When entering a shop, restaurant or similar venue, visitors should say a greeting such as "Guten Tag" (or "Grüß Gott" in Bavaria) before saying what it is that they want. Likewise, to leave without saying "Auf Wiedersehen" can also cause offence.

Be prepared for an early start to the day - businesses and schools often open at 8 am.

German police have the right to ask to see identification, at any time. For British citizens, the only acceptable form of ID is a valid passport.
