Cyprus has an efficient and cheap bus service connecting all towns and villages. Buses to rural areas are also available, and although slow, can be an excellent way of discovering the more remote villages. Metered taxis run 24 hours between all the main towns on the island.

However, hiring a car is usually the best way to explore the island; vehicles should be booked well in advance during the summer season (minimum age to hire a car is 21). Traffic drives on the left and road signs are in both Greek and English. The maximum speed limit is 100 kph (63 mph) on highways, 80 kph (50 mph) on most other roads and 50 kph (32 mph) in built-up areas.

In Nicosia and Limassol, there is an efficient bus service. Service also exist in other Cypriot towns and cities, although few of these are used by tourists. Taxis are widely available; a 15% surcharge is in operation from 11pm to 6am. Tipping is expected.
