Internal Transport
There are internal flights available to all inhabited islands except Brava and San Antao.
Ferry service connects Santiago, Fogo and Brava, cargo boats travelling between the islands may also take passengers. Due to submerged rocks, sea conditions around the islands can be treacherous; travel to the southern islands of Brava and Fogo can be particularly disrupted.
There are over 2,250 km of roads on the islands, of which approximately one-third are cobbled. However, there is an ongoing road improvement programme to convert cobblestone roads into asphalt. Although the paved roads are fairly narrow and winding, road conditions and driving standards are generally of a reasonable quality. Car hire is available on the main islands (book in advance if possible), and drivers can also be hired to see the main sights on the islands.
Local transport is usually provided by an Aluguer (minibus or pick-up truck). It is best to agree taxi fares in advance, although some drivers may prefer to use a meter. Buses are satisfactory.
