Must See

Bandar Seri Begawan

Bandar Seri Gegawan is the neat, clean and modern capital of Brunei, with wide roads and grand public buildings. The golden domed Omar Ali Saifuddin Mosque stands close to the Brunei River, in the middle of its own artificial lagoon. It has an opulent interior, featuring Italian marble walls and an elevator. Visitors may find some excellent views over the town and Kampung Ayer stilt village (see below) from the minaret crowning the mosque.

Other attractions include Istana Nurul Iman, the Sultan's lavish home in the capital; the Royal Regalia Building, which is home to a collection of ceremonial objects, including the jewel encrusted crown worn by the Sultan during his coronation and the royal chariot; the ancient Tomb of Sultan Bolkiah, the 5th sultan, who was known as the 'singing admiral' for his love of music and of conquest; the Malay Technology Museum showing traditional crafts; and the Brunei Museum.

Batang Duri

Batang Duri is an Iban longhouse on the Temburong River south-east of the capital. A short boat-ride from there is the Kuala Belalong Field Studies Centre, which researches tropical rainforest species. There are pleasant walking trails and a zoo where visitors can see monkeys, civets, otters and birds.

Jerudong

Outside the capital within the Brunei-Muara district is Jerudong, the playground of the Sultan, where he indulges in his favourite pastime, polo. The Jerudong complex features a polo stadium, stables, a golf course, trapshooting and croquet facilities. Unfortunately, entrance to the complex is by invitation only.

However, there is also a modern theme park, with a huge range of free rides. Behind the park, Jerudong Beach has some impressive cliffs, along with stalls selling fish.

Kampong Ayer

Along the river from Bandar Seri Gegawan lies the Kampung Ayer area; a collection of 28 water villages, built on stilts in the water and home to half the city's population. Reputed to be the largest collection of stilt habitations in the world, Kampong Ayer combines traditional architecture with modern facilities such as Internet connections.

Pulau Ranggu

Pulau Ranggu is home to a large colony of proboscis monkeys, along with a large number of macaques. Take a river taxi around sunset to catch a glimpse of them.

Tasek Merimbun

Located in a hill resort in the Tutong District is Tasek Merimbun, Brunei's largest lake. Just over an hour's drive from Bandar Seri Begawan, the area contains bird watching facilities, picnicking and jungle trails.

Wasai Kandal

This lush forest area with its waterfalls and pools is easily reached by car, and is popular for picnics.
