Food & Drink

Bosnian and Herzegovinan food is closely related to Turkish, Greek and other Mediterranean cuisines, and includes such dishes as:

  • Bosanski lonac (meat and vegetable stew)
  • Turkish delight
  • Halva (crushed sesame seeds in honey)

The typical cuisine does not use many spices; when it does, they appear in very small quantity. Most dishes are light, as they are cooked in lots of water; the sauces consisting of little more than the natural juices of the vegetables in the dish. Typical ingredients include spinach, tomatoes, courgettes, dried beans, fresh beans, onions, carrots, peppers, plums, milk, and cream called Pavlaka. Meat dishes include primarily beef and lamb. Pork is not widely used, due to the large Muslim population.

The best local wines come from Herzegovina where the climate is suitable for growing grapes.
