Brussels
The Belgian capital is a stylish city where you'll hear both French and Flemish spoken, and where you'll find modern art museums standing side by side with the city's medieval buildings. Roughly divided into two main areas, the Lower and Upper Towns, Brussels is a great weekend destination, whenever you choose to go. In the Lower Town you'll find the imposing Grand Place, a former market square lined with traditional cafes, intimate restaurants and a stunning town hall. The square leads off to cobbled streets where there's plenty of opportunity to stop for a beer or coffee and wonderfully calorific cakes. Work it all off with a trip up-town to the French-speaking part of the city, a more modern area where you'll find chic shops and the Belgian parliamentary buildings.
Brussels is also the birthplace of cartoon character Tin-Tin, the surreal artist Magritte and that infamous sculpture of the little boy urinating, the Pis Mannekin - a must-visit photo opportunity! One of the other great attractions of the Belgian capital is its combination of French and Flemish culture which means that come evening, you can choose to go French at a traditional brasserie or make like the Belgians with a tasty steak, bowl of chips and moreish glass of beer.
