Internal Transport
Although there are no domestic air services, transport on the island is generally good. A network of roads covers the entire island, although in rural areas, roads are often in poor condition with many potholes.
Route taxis (known as ZR's), travel to most points on the island. These small buses can at times be crowded, but will usually take the more scenic routes to destinations. They generally depart from the capital Bridgetown or from Speightstown in the northern part of the island.
Buses are also abundant in Barbados. There are three bus systems running seven days a week (though less frequently on Sundays), and there is a flat fare to ride on any of them. They are crowded during rush hours. Some hotels also provide visitors with shuttles to points of interest on the island. Hotel shuttles generally leave right outside the hotel lobby.
The island also has an abundance of taxis for hire, although visitors staying on the island may find this an expensive option. Taxis do not have meters, but fares are regulated by the government. It is advised to check the fare before travel.
Visitors also have the option of transport by car, presuming that they have a driver's licence (issued in their native country). There are several locally owned and operated vehicle rental agencies at the airport, at offices in Bridgetown and at main hotels. Speed limits are 40, 60 and 80 kph (25, 37 and 50 mph). Petrol is comparatively cheap.
