You are strongly advised to carry ID documents at all times; this could be in the form of a photocopy of the data page of your passport.

Austrians are formal in business and social dealings. On first introduction first names are not used, but can be from the second meeting onward. Handshaking is the normal greeting.

The Church is well respected in their society, and the traveller should keep this in mind.

When entering restaurants or shops it is important to say 'Guten Tag', or 'Grass Gott', and 'Auf Wiedersehen' when leaving.

If invited to dinner, it is the usual custom to give flowers to the hostess.

Dress smartly for the opera or theatre.
