Best Times to Visit
Weather
Argentina is a huge country with a wide ranging climate. It is subtropical in the north, with rain throughout the year, whilst the far south is sub-arctic. The central mainland is temperate; however, it can be cool in winter and hot and humid during summer (December to February). (See Climate in Argentina for a more detailed look at the weather).
Visitors are advised to bring lightweight clothing for the north and warm clothes for the south and the mountains, or during winter months in the central area. It is a good idea to bring waterproofs for all areas.
Festivals
Public holidays include most of the Catholic holidays, although holidays of other faiths are respected. The main historic holidays include the anniversaries of the May Revolution (May 25), the Independence Day (July 9), National Flag day (third Monday in June), and the death of national hero José de San Martín (August 17).
Argentina is also home to many festivals and celebrations including:
- the Snow Carnival in ski resorts in August
- the Polo Argentine Open, hosted between November and December in Palermo
- the traditional Carnival at Humahuaca held near Ash Wednesday
- the Buenos Aires Tango Festival held between February and March
- the International Video-Dance Festival held each July in Buenos Aires
